When I was painting this piece, my concept was about the left brain/right brain. I was a biochemical engineer in the 1980's and 1990's. I cultured microbes and viruses and then led design teams to build factories for the manufacture pharmaceuticals using microorganisms. That sounds fancy and very "left brain" of me, doesn't it? In truth, I feel like I used a lot of creativity and right brain skills as an engineer. Much of what I did was organizing people, and people are easiest to manage if you are being creative, I believe.
Now that I am a full time artist, people sometimes think I dissolve into a zen place and relax each day, letting my brushes fly while my right brain takes control. Not true. I put a lot of thought into every decision I make while painting. My process is not something I can do when I am tired or ill. It's really not very relaxing at all. I love it, but it takes both sides of my brain working together, in the light, unbroken and fully engaged.

Debra is a contemporary realist painter, an experienced chemical engineer, a mother, a wife & a traveler and her art expresses all of these life adventures!
Using oil or acrylic paints, Debra paints in a tightly rendered realistic style. Her work ranges in size from four feet down to two inches. Part of her process for creating miniature fine art involves the use of magnifying lenses, and offering interactive painting demonstrations where she invites people to try their hand at painting on pieces she has started.
Debra likes to break rules, especially the rule that says you should only paint one subject. This makes her a good choice for collectors who want to commission a painting. She confidently renders still life, portraits, pets, cityscapes, seascapes & landscapes. Peruse her paintings here but visit the gallery to fully experience them!
