Artist Terry Gilecki only paints ornamental varieties of Koi fish descended from carp, dating to the early 19th century in Niigata, Japan. He is a Master Koi painter. The Koi, acording to Terry, are but one ingredient in the recipe but they are essential, bringing life, color and the sense of calm and serenity into his art.
Terry focuses on the levels of the painting as seen from the world above the pond, below the water's surface and beneath the pond itself.
Small reflections on the water or in a raindrop balancing on a lily pad contain an entirely new image within them. Everything is connected in his paintings, and it's worth the time to discover the hidden aesthetic pleasures Terry includes.
When I first experienced the charm of the Koi pond (and many others will agree) I was struck by the sense of calm and tranquility it bestowed upon me. It was always my goal to make art that would not only come out to greet the viewer but also make a positive and lasting impression on the viewer. I knew at that moment, that this was a subject that I would want to paint and explore again and again.
